Amtrak’s History Comes Under Attack in Light of Derailment That Ended 9 Lives

A devastating Amtrak train derailment took the lives of 9 people while injuring dozens more. Even more disturbing, the latest accident is only one out of a long list of crashes in Amtrak’s history. In 2014, 29 trains derailed compared to 21 accidents in 2010, and a whopping 43 in 2006. In total, Amtrak has reported over 700 accidents in the last 10 years.

The deadly accident in Pennsylvania is raising concerns regarding safety regulations at Amtrak and have consumers wondering if it is safe to take the train when they travel. Sadly, the latest accident was completely avoidable if there would have been a Positive Train Control installed on that particular section of track.

There is talk that Amtrak’s federal funding will be cut only contributing to more problems for the long running train service. Sadly, none of this provides any comfort to the families who have been devastated by the Amtrak derailment in Pennsylvania who now have to mourn the loss of their loved ones.

There will be continued investigations in Amtrak’s operations and officials are doing everything they can to try and prevent another tragic derailment. One thing is clear, too many of these accidents have occurred and something must be done according to Mathieson.
