Ocean Coast College Hugs The Pacific Ocean And Loves Its Rowing Team

The Orange Coast College (OCC), a two-year school, with 25,000 students, is located in Orange County, in Costa Mesa, CA. and founded in 1947. Orange County, one of the wealthiest Counties in California. Anaheim, in Orange County, is known for Disneyland, the Los Angeles baseball team and the Anaheim Ducks (National Hockey League). Orange County also includes Newport Beach which is one of the richest communities in the United States.

OCC grants an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree and offers 130 career programs. Its Academic Divisions include Business & Computing, Consumer & Health Sciences, Counseling Services, Kinesiology & Athletics, Literature & Languages, Mathematics & Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Technology, and Visual & Performing Arts. OCC also has an excellent Public Nautical Program.

OCC Athletics program is very competitive with both two-year and four-year institutions. The program is extensive and offers both men’s and women’s sports. All of the major college sports are offered, from baseball to volleyball, including Crew.

OCC has a long history with its Crew program, which is one of OCC’s brightest lights. OCCs crew program began in 1953. The OCC team trains on Newport Harbor.

The American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) governs the ACRA national championship regatta, which puts on annual rowing competitions. OCC has won the ACRA national championship title for eleven years. Their next competition was set for May 27th and 28th of 2017, in Gainsville, GA.

The assistant coach of the Orange Coast College rowing team is Steve Morris who was a student at OCC. Several of the boats can cost up to $55,000, and OCC has four boats. The rowing crew practices six days a week from May to August. Each boat contains eight crew members who must row in perfect synchronization.

At the 2017 ACRA national championship, Orange Coast College, unfortunately, broke their winning streak but did not break their spirit.
