How The Rowing Team At Orange Coast College Has Found So Much Success

For a two-year college, Orange Coast College (OCC) has a remarkably successful rowing program. Despite going up against the top four-year university rowing programs Orange Coast College’s teams have won 11 national titles. They went for their 12th title in the 2017 rowing season.

Rowing is a purely amateur sport that involves the power and grace of each individual rower working in unity with their teammates. The captain of the team leads the others and in the 2017 season this position was occupied by Daniel Amado. Amado only recently returned to rowing as he had broken a disk in his back while competing for Los Alamitos High School. He credited the strength he had built through rowing as the reason he was able to get over this injury.

Steve Morris used to be the coach of the rowing team at OCC before other responsibilities in his life needed more of his attention. He now serves as the teams assistant coach which doesn’t entail as much of a time commitment. Talking about rowing, he has said that what he enjoys about the sport is that each rower is working in perfect concert with the other rowers. He said they have to keep perfectly in time or else the rhythm is ruined and the boat won’t go as fast as it otherwise would.

Showing the success of the OCC rowing program, to date 10 of its participants have gone on to compete in the Olympics and world championship events. Many of the rowers go on to row at the programs that exist at four-year universities across the nation. The current coach of the team, Cameron Brown, has said that many of the rowers have gotten much better at the sport at OCC because of the discipline and friendships they have developed at the program.

OCC first held classes in 1948. It is now the third largest community college in Orange County, California. It offers two-year associate degrees as well as certificates of completion. There are about 24,000 undergraduate students at the school and many of them go to four-year universities after completing their education at OCC. Learn more:

Rocketship Education Is Taking Teaching To A New Level And Changing Their Students Lives

Unfortunately poor children are more likely to start school already behind and end up dropping out. Rocketship Discovery may have found an answer with five charter elementary schools. On standard tests the poor Spanish and Latino students at Rocketship Education have exceeded the state average. The school wants to expand into fifty cities by the year 2020. Throughout the county people are clamoring for Rocketship schools in their areas and $2 million was spent by the Obama administration to help the school grow.

Rocketship Education spends two hours every day teaching students with computers designed to match their level and help them learn subtraction and addition. The rest of the students day is spent with teachers in a classroom learning critical thinking and focusing on more complex subjects. Rocketship works with students with special educational needs and many of them have progressed to the status of a regular student. The students are waking up early on the weekends because they want to do their homework and they are making progress. One particular girl had a breakthrough in math due to the schools clever use of an animated penguin.

Rocketship Education pays to train their staff and their salaries are higher than in public schools. They offer teachers bonuses when their students meet specific goals to ensure the teachers are happy and take an interest in their students accomplishments. Although achievement, responsibility, and discipline are emphasized the students also get to have fun. School begins every morning with a concept called the Rocketship Launch. All the kids get together just outside the school and dance with their teachers to the sounds of a boom box. The kids are taught math, the arts, reading, and science.

Rocketship Education prepares their students for standardized tests while helping them to become critical thinkers. The school goes to extremes to make certain the parents are involved. They want them to pledge that every night they will read to their children, volunteer, check their children’s homework, and attend meetings. Teachers make visits to the homes of their students and on one memorable occaision the teacher played the piano for her student and her family. Rocketship Education is making a difference in the lives of their students.

Betsy DeVos is Set to Transform the Education System

Betsy DeVos is the 11th U.S. secretary of education. She was passed by the Senate on February 7, 2017, after her nomination by President Donald J. Trump. Betsy DeVos has for more than 30 years been engaged in advocating for policy change when it comes to education. She is passionate about giving all children the fair right to a world-class education. Her interest in education started in her early years as a mother when she noticed that not all children had a chance to attend a school of their choice. Since then, she has been involved in the campaign for better educational options all over the country. For about 15 years, she has served as a mentor for at-risk children in the Grand Rapids Public Schools in Michigan State. She says her interactions with them forever changed her life perspective. She has continued with her campaigns, which have been successful in 25 states and the District of Columbia. She is a firm believer that the state where a child comes from or the economic status of the child’s family should not influence the quality of education the child receives. Betsy DeVos is married to entrepreneur cum philanthropist, Dick DeVos. Together they have four children and six grandchildren.

Betsy DeVos – Policy & Involvement is also a huge philanthropist, especially in matters education. She is a great supporter of Potter’s House Christian School where she first took her children to study. It was here where the struggles parents go through while looking for good education for their kids dawned upon her and her husband. Although she and her husband could afford any school of their choice, to many parents this was a luxury. She has since been making contributions to the Potter’s House Christian School.Betsy joined the American Federation for Children to further her cause and she is the current chairlady of the organization. She admits it was difficult to educate and convince the public about the need for better educational choice.

However, through the American Federation for Children, they have come up with measures to assist in their campaign. These steps include identifying potential legislators, enlightening them about the issue, assisting them to get elected, helping in drafting and passing legislation, and helping in implementation of programs workable for children.According to her, her biggest success has to be the tax-credit scholarship program in Florida. Through this system, more than 50,000 children have been able to attend schools of their family’s choice irrespective of their economic background. Also, Louisiana and Indiana have experienced major reforms due to her efforts. When questioned about how she divides her time, she responded that she did not worry about how she spent her time since all her efforts, in the end, pay off, either locally or nationally.
