D’Angelo is coming back into the spotlight with the reissue of his classic Neo-Soul album called “Brown Sugar.” he has plans to turn this into a double CD that contains remixes and acapella versions of certain songs. This is a treat for fans that have always been a fan of D’Angelo music. It is definitely notable because D’Angelo has been out of the spotlight for so long.

A couple of years ago he did take to the stage with a very well-received album called “Black Messiah.” This would be the album that dropped more than a decade after D’Angelo had left the spotlight. He would catapult to fame in the 90s as a sex symbol that many people compared to a young Marvin Gaye and Prince. He was a prolific songwriter that would captivate an audience with a Neo-Soul sound that was a driving force behind many other groups that would follow. Artists like Musiq Soulchild, Floetry and India Arie would all bring forth a sound that was in the same flow of the type of work that
D’Angelo was doing.

Over the years he has been one to shy away from the spotlight in many aspects, but he has continued to work on new music, and fans are looking forward to seeing more of what he may be releasing in the upcoming years. He was a big fan of Prince so the death of Prince really put him in an awkward space. He was put in a place where he would have to analyze his own life and look for a sense of balance between the music that he wanted to create and the life of seclusion that stopped him from being creative. D’Angelo appears to be coming back stronger than ever with a whole new take on life.

Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl is a Nice Guy

From all accounts, Dave Grohl, front man for the rock band the Foo Fighters is a super nice guy. And this story about him on The Age just confirms what a good guy he is.

Australian man Ken Powell may be the biggest Foo Fighters fan in the country. Some know Ken as Ken The Foo Fighter because of his love and loyalty to the group. Ken, who is 56-years-old, has also been fighting melanoma for the past 14 years. Unfortunately Ken, who has to use a wheelchair, is dying from the cancer. His dream before he goes has been to meet the Foo Fighters and he almost achieved it.

Despite his ailing health, Ken traveled around Australia to see every show the Foo Fighters performed in the country. Foo Fighters fan Brian Torchin has learned that Ken had tickets for a special meet-and-greet with the band in Perth, however it was cancelled due to Dave Grohl getting food poisoning. Ken was disappointed but still excited that he got to see his idols perform so many times.

A flight attendant who knew of Ken’s story also happened to be on the same flight as Grohl and the group recently. She approached him to tell him about Ken. Grohl reached out to him and offered the chance to see and meet them in Los Angeles. Ken has set up a GoFundMe page to help him fund his travels to fulfill his dream.

Bob Dylan Gives Comprehensive Speech

Famous singer-songwriter Bob Dylan gave a speech recently while accepting a Person Of The Year award from the MusiCares organization. The speech was unusual for Bob Dylan, who usually gives short speeches, because it was around a half an hour long. In the speech, Bob Dylan covered a number of topics related to his career. Rolling Stone Magazine has an in depth analysis of the speech on their website.

One part of the speech that struck me as interesting is when Dylan noted that critics often ridicule his distinctive voice. He said that while he is singled out for ridicule, singers like Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen who also have odd voices aren’t. Dylan is clearly sensitive about his voice, and that is something that you would not expect since he has had so much success in so many ways. In fact, he’s basically a darling of the critics so it’s unusual to hear him sound bitter about them.

Fans like Flavio Pentagna Guimaraes BMG know that Bob Dylan also thanked former president Jimmy Carter. It turns out that the two are friends, which is interesting. The article mentioned that Carter invited Bob Dylan to visit when Carter was still the governor of Georgia. Carter must have been a true fan, since there wouldn’t have been much political value in associating with Dylan at that time.

All in all, this article by Rolling Stone is well worth reading.

Tom Rothman Considered for Top Sony Position

Recently, Amy Pascal announced that she is stepping down from her job as co-chairman at Sony Pictures Entertainment, which has created a vacancy that someone else will have to step in and fill. Pascal has had the job for 15 years, but the scandal surrounding the movie The Interview, which Pascal was solely responsible for green-lighting has led her to step down from her post.

As reported in the Hollywood Reporter, among the top candidates for the role is Tim Rothman, who is currently running the revived TriStar label on the Sony lot. He is also the former studio head of 20th Century Fox.

Rothman was in London at the time that Pascal announced that she was stepping down, so he has not been officially declared as a frontrunner for the position, but his connections and experience with the business would make him a valuable asset and an obvious choice for the next co-chairman at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Even before the scandal surrounding the Interview, there was speculation that Rothman would be considered to replace Pascal when she decided to resign. Rothman is one of several candidates that is likely to be considered for the job, however he is one of the top two people in a position to take over Pascal’s job. One of the elements in Rothman’s favor is that at Fox he was known for having a tight hold on finances and being incredibly careful with budgets, something that many executives at Sony feel the company could benefit from, as Pascal was often criticized for overspending.

Of course there have been no official announcements made, as Pascal only just announced that she will be resigning when her current contract ends. According to her statement, she will stay on until May, presumably to help the new co-chairman transition into the role.

When you think about Titanic and Avatar, you probably think of Leonardo DiCaprio, James Cameron, and those blue people, correct? What about Tom Rothman?

Unless you are in the movie production atmosphere, the name may not ring a bell. Tom Rothman was the former Chairman and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Fox Filmed Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, Blue Sky Animation, 20th Century Fox Television, and the company he founded, Fox Searchlight which won the prestigious Best Picture Oscar in 2008 for Slumdog Millionaire.

Some other films made under his tutelage at Fox include – Life of Pi, Cast Way, Black Swan, Minority Report,Walk the Line, Marley and Me, Juno, The Crucible, and the two aforementioned films that became the two highest grossing films ever, thus far.

He was also the President of Worldwide Production for the Samuel Goldwyn Company before moving on to Fox. Henry V, Truly Madly Deeply, and Wild at Heart are a few of the films he brought to the screen while at Samuel Goldwyn Company.

His credentials so far should tell you that he is a very big man on campus — well actually — in film. When it comes to movie making, not just the actors and directors are responsible for bringing movies to the big screen.

He was recently (2013) named the Chairman of Tristar Pictures with Sony Pictures Entertainment distributing its productions worldwide. He is currently producing Steven Spielberg’s movie, Robopocalypse.

A Magna Cum Laude graduate from Brown University, and a two time John Kent Scholar (highest academic honor) recipient from Columbia Law School, Tom Rothman has also been an English teacher, a soccer and lacrosse coach, and a law clerk before hopping into the world of film and television.

Rothman was nominated by President Obama for a position on the National Council on the Arts in 2013. The NCA is responsible for grants, funding and recommendations for the National Endowment for the Arts.
