Sarah Jessica Parker Cuts Ties With EpiPen

Sarah Jessica Parker has ended her business association with Mylan, the maker of the EpiPen, a device that auto-injects epinephrine to halt allergic reactions. In an emotional post on Instagram, the “Sex and the City” actress explained why she’s cutting ties with the company.

In recent years, the cost of EpiPens has skyrocketed from around $57 USD to more than $600. Parker’s own son has severe allergies and keeps an EpiPen handy in case of an attack. She originally joined forces with Mylan to raise awareness of the dangers of anaphylactic shock and the importance of having an EpiPen to combat allergic reactions. The price hike, according to her Instagram post, is something she can’t support, since it makes paying for the life-saving device impossible for lower-income families.

Parker isn’t the only one to find the increased price disturbing. As news of the high cost spread, outrage grew across the United States, bringing Mylan’s CEO, Heather Bresch, under fire. She claimed to be “frustrated” with the situation and blamed middlemen and the insurance industry for the cost increase.

In an effort to appease critics, Mylan is offering rebates, a savings card and an expanded assistance program for those who need EpiPens. For some people, it’s too little, too late. The price has been increasing for years, and only now that celebrities such as Parker have spoken out and raised awareness has Mylan responded to the criticism.
