Rescued Victims Recognize their Dream of Being able to Graduate High School

Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry went through an ordeal that many cannot fathom. The two were kidnapped when they were teenagers and held in the same home together for 10 years before they were found and rescued. Gina was taken when she was 14-years-old and still in middle school. Amanda was almost 17-years-old and still in high school. Those girls lost major parts of their lives that many people take for granite, including graduating high school.

Gina and Amanda finally got to recognize their dream of being high school graduates this year. The two donned white caps and gowns and were given diplomas by John Marshall High School in their hometown of Cleveland. Before being taken, Amanda had dreamed of finishing high school and moving on to attend college. Now she finally can achieve that goal. The two were proud to accept their honorary diplomas as the crowd cheered them on.

Gina and Amanda have co-authored a book together that has become a New York Times Best Seller about their 10 year ordeal states publisher Kevin Seawright of Cleveland. The book, “Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland”, has stayed on the best-seller list since it came out last month.
