La La Land Nominated for 14 Oscars

The Oscar ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 26. As of now, there is a clear frontrunner for best picture: Damien Chazelle’s La La Land.

This brightly colored musical confection, which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, racked up an impressive 14 nominations. It’s easily the most nominated film of the year. It’s also one of the most nominated films of all time, tied with previous record holders Titanic and All About Eve.

La La Land was nominated for awards in most major categories. Besides best picture, Damien Chazelle was nominated for best director and best original screenplay. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were nominated for best actress and best actor. La La Land is notable for being an original musical, and this earned it a number of relevant nominations, including best original score, best original song, best sound editing, and best sound mixing. The brightly colored sets and costumes were also recognized, via nominations for costume design and production design.

The film follows the whirlwind romance of Sebastian and Mia, who fall in love against the dreamy backdrop of Los Angeles. Sebastian, a jazz pianist nostalgic for the past, is drawn to Mia’s passion for acting. They quickly sing and dance their way into each other’s hearts. Success soon threatens their relationship, however, and their love may be crushed by the weight of their dreams.

Chazelle had a difficult time getting the film funded. He began writing the film in 2010, but was unable to get the necessary funding. Producers thought that an original movie musical was too much of a gamble. Eventually, Chazelle decided to move on. This led him to direct his breakthrough film, Whiplash. After the success of Whiplash, however, Chazelle was able to secure the necessary budget for La La Land, and the rest is movie history.
