Paul Rudd Won’t be a Part of Sonic the Hedgehog

Paul Rudd remains one busy lead actor. With the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp film, Rudd further cements himself as a player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And he’ll be appearing in other MCU ensemble features as well. What he won’t be doing, however, is playing a role in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film. Rumors swirled that Rudd was slated for a lead role in the project. At one point, indications were he was close to signing. Paramount, however, issued a clarification on the news. Rudd isn’t appearing in the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

That’s not to say no one at Paramount wanted Rudd in the feature. He was seriously considered for a part. As of right now though, Rudd won’t be in the film.

Rudd wasn’t sought to play the lead character of Sonic. Sonic will be pure CGI and voiced by a human actor. A voice-only job probably wouldn’t be something a rising actor such as Rudd prefers. It wouldn’t matter. The character he was considered for was a sidekick to Sonic. Honestly, that would be an even worse role for Rudd.

Playing a supporting role to a CGI-created character doesn’t befit someone whose career is on the upswing. Rudd already stars in a successful franchise. Ant-Man, like other MCU projects, will probably become a trilogy. What benefit does the actor gain from appearing in a risky endeavor such as Sonic the Hedgehog?

Sonic may prove to be a hit, but the film must do so without Rudd.
