Billionaire Peter Thiel: From Silicon Valley to Washington D.C.

President-Elect Donald Trump recently named Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel to his presidential transition team. Although the Republican candidate did not receive extensive support from high tech firms, Peter Thiel stood out as one of the most prominent high tech leaders lending his public support to a Trump Administration during the hard-fought election contest.

Born in Frankfurt, West Germany in 1967, 49-year old Peter Thiel succeeded in business and the innovative tech world. A resident of San Francisco, he graduated from Stanford University with a bachelors degree and a graduate degree in Law. He co-founded PayPal in 1998 (where he served as the company CEO) and has also participated in several venture capital funds responsible for sponsoring successful tech startup ventures. He had the good business foresight to make the first outside investment in the social media company Facebook. In September, 2015, Forbes estimated his net worth at around 2.8 billion. A Christian and a Republican, he offered public support to Donald Trump’s presidential ambitions in the face of widespread opposition to the Republic candidate among Silicon Valley leaders.

As a member of the Trump transition team, Peter Thiel will play a role in scrutinizing prospective Trump Administration appointees. He has reportedly not rejected the notion that he might also accept an appointment in the Trump Administration. A Libertarian, Mr. Thiel previously made public addresses on behalf of the Republican National Convention. His work on the transition team will continue until the President-Elect’s inauguration on January 20, 2017.
