Charles Koch Donates To George Mason University In Virginia

Industrialist and philanthropist Charles Koch is known for donating significant amounts of money to universities. The Wichita, Kansas native is a strong supporter of conservative principles and libertarian philosophy in education, government and business. Koch is one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States with an estimated net worth of over $43 billion dollars. His foundation is heavily involved in promoting conservative values and helps fund conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. Charles Koch currently serves as chief executive officer of Koch Industries, a conglomerate company that is one the largest private firms in the world.

Let’s take a look at one of the biggest recipients of Charles Koch’s generosity and funding in higher education. Located outside of Washington D.C. in suburban Fairfax, Virginia, George Mason University is the biggest recipient in terms of educational support from the Kochs. The university received a total of about $48 million dollars from the Koch Foundation in the period spanning from 2011-2014. Charles Koch donates to hundreds of universities in the United States every year. George Mason University however is the only higher education institution to receive more than a million dollars annually from Charles Koch.

Charle’s Koch’s extravagant donations to George Mason University has had a noticeable impact on the college and its curriculum. The university is now famous for being a strong proponent of conservative economic principles and laws. Charles Koch’s lavish donations help to fulfill a gap at George Mason University that would leave the school to cutting programs or staff.

In 2014, Charles Koch gave $16.8 million dollars to George Mason University. Mr. Koch also supports and plays an active role in the Institute For Humane Studies which is a part of the university. Recently Charles Koch donated another $10 million to George Mason University. Another anonymous donor donated $20 million to the law school at the George Mason. In honor of the two donations to the law school, George Mason University will rename its law school in the name of supreme court justice Antonin Scalia who passed away this year.

Charles Koch not only donates heavily to George Mason University but he is actively involved in the Institute For Humane Studies at the college as a board member. The institute helps bring libertarian ideas and data to the forefront of government and policy debates. Thanks to Mr. Charles Koch‘s generosity and involvement the Institute of Humane Studies is one of the leading libertarian and policy think tanks in the country.
