The company began in 2012, when two Harvard Students shared a dorm room, a messy dorm room. Oisin Hanrahan and Umang Dua were throwing out ideas for startup companies for themselves. This brainstorming took place in the midst of their messy room. Their mess and disorder provided the inspiration for what would become a very profitable company. If they needed help with cleaning, then so did thousands of other people. However, their company took an innovative twist.

Hanrahan and Dua knew they had a great idea but decided to do something a little different by providing customers with an app and a website. With a tap of the finger, customers could enter their zip code, the number of rooms needing cleaning, and the start time. In return, Handy set up the appointment with an employee and the customer got a price quote upfront and knew exactly what their fee would be. In addition, customers knew that the work will be done by a Handy employee or freelancer who had been thoroughly screened with background checks, reference checks, and a personal interview. The customer’s worries about dependable, trustworthy cleaners was eliminated. Although thousands of people have applied to work for Handy app on Crunchbase, only 3% have been accepted.

It is a winning opportunity for both the customer and the employee. The customer enjoys the ease and convenience in selecting reliable, trustworthy service. The employee has dependable pay and flexible hours. No more payments under the table with no 1099’s at the end of the year. Handy takes care of all payments, payroll, and scheduling.

In three short years, Handy Home Cleaning Services has enjoyed a rapid growth and expanded to include plumbing and handyman services. Sales have grown each month, as much as 60% over one three month period. Currently, it operates in 25 cities in the United States and two in Canada. It has several employees and thousands of freelancers that can supply the 10,000 job requests each month. Plans are in the works to expand to other cities.

According to Hanrahan, “Our vision is not to build just a cleaning company, but a brand that takes care of your home.” Finding a need and filling it is something that Hanrahan and Dua have done well. By combining technological advances with providing dependable and trustworthy service for customers and employees alike, all of them are winners.
