John Cena tops highest-paid WWE superstars list for 2017

WWE superstar John Cena was recently reported as the top overall earner for 2017 within the professional wrestling company. Cena, who has used his WWE wrestling career to springboard to television and movie roles, earned a whopping $10 million last year, edging him past “The Beast” Brock Lesnar, who earned a “not so bad” $6.5 million.

As Business Insider reported for their top 10 highest-paid WWE superstars list, Cena has used his popularity from pro wrestling to transition to movie roles, similar to former WWE star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Among Cena’s movie credits are “Trainwreck,” the animated film “Ferdinand,” and the recent comedy, “Blockers.”

Lesnar, who is second on the list, currently holds WWE’s Universal Championship, but much like Cena isn’t seen on WWE programming as much. He’s trailed by Roman Reigns ($4.3 million), AJ Styles ($3.5 million), and Triple H ($3.2 million) to round out the top five on the list. Interestingly, Reigns and Styles are much more active in terms of their WWE appearances as they are usually featured in high-profile matches on WWE’s television shows or pay-per-views.

Other superstars appearing on the top earners for 2017 list include current WWE Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins, and longtime stars Randy Orton, and The Undertaker. Of those stars, The Undertaker and Orton both seem like they are heading on a similar path to Cena with retirement coming in the next several years. Orton has appeared in a few movie roles and could potentially do more, while Taker appears to be ready to enjoy a retired lifestyle.
