Johnny Depp and the Future of Pirates of the Caribbean

The new Pirates of the Caribbean movie arrives on Memorial Day weekend of 2017. The new entry in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, has not exactly thrilled critics. The film has only about a 31% positive score on the Rotten Tomatoes meter. For the core group of POTC fans, critical and even fellow audience member ratings mean very little. They just want to see Johnny Depp playing the Captain Jack Sparrow role one more time.

Per producer Jerry Bruckheimer, once Depp chooses to leave the Pirates franchise, the seafaring ghostly franchise will finally be sunk. No Depp means no more Pirates films.

Would Johnny Depp choose to leave the role?

This is a hard question to answer as no movie fan can figure out what the actor’s current plans for his future are. The Pirates movies are financially rewarding. People buy hundreds of millions of dollars in movie tickets, merchandise, Blu-ray discs, and more. Depp knows this franchise is a cash cow for all involved. Continuing with Pirates continues to keep him gainfully employed in a high-profile, high-paying role.

Sadly, few of Depp’s other films have been box office magic. If it were not for the Pirates films being box office gold, the disastrous Lone Ranger film probably would have sunk his career for good.

Depp likely would be interested in staying with the Pirates films. There is no upside to leaving the series.
