Michael Lacey: Math- and Futurama!

He received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1987 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Lacey was himself mentored by Walter Philipp. The two worked together to present proof of the almost sure “central limit theorem.”

Michael Lacey has also held faculty positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as Louisiana State University prior to his position with Georgia Tech.

He was also at Indiana University where he was awarded a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. He was also given a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 for work done in conjunction with Xiaochun Li and an American Mathematics Society Fellowship in 2012.

Lacey has spent some time directing various training grants such as VIGRE and MCPT, both from the National Science Foundation. Though this work Lacey has helped dozens of doctorate candidates achieve their goals.

He teaches high-level mathematics at Georgia Tech, M4305 and M3225. His students have given him some mixed reviews which he seems to wear with pride. Possibly best know for lecturing about mathematics and the TV show “Futurama” he does not shy away from letting prospective students and attendees know what his courses and lectures will be about: Math, which not everyone wants to dive as deeply into as he does.
